Lord Deremore’s Primary School – North Yorkshire, England

The children at Lord Deremore’s decided to take quick action after learning that wild hedgehogs are on the red list. The students turned their school into a place where hedgehogs could live and thrive.

Year 6 students planted trees and created a huge ‘dead hedge’ from old branches and twigs. This has helped create a peaceful place for hedgehogs to live in with lots of log piles and hedgehog houses.

The efforts have not gone unnoticed by their hedgehog friends though! Since starting the project, the team has managed to rescue 6 poorly hedgehogs. Well done Lord Deremore’s Primary school!

Libanus Primary School – Caerphilly County Borough, Wales

The year 5 and 6 classes of this Primary school celebrated protecting the environment by having their own ‘Earth Fortnight’. The students studied the effects of fast fashion and designed their own clothing items, using unwanted clothing and recycled materials.

The year 5 and 6’s then decided to have their own ‘Trashion Show’, where they taught their class mates the affect fast fashion can have on the environment. The show included top tips on how to change your clothing can help protect the environment – all whilst walking the catwalk at the same time!

Perry Hall Primary School – Greater London, England

The Marine Marvels team at Perry Hall are working to tackle water pollution. The Marine Marvels, students who are a part of the eco-committee, are made up of children from Year 4 and 6, and they aim to help younger students learn about the importance of saving water.

The Marine Marvels take on many projects, such as a writing competition where they asked pupils to create a ‘diary of a single-use plastic item’. These diaries tell the stories of plastics such as balloons, plastic bags, Sellotape and crisp packets. The winning entries will even have a film made about their story!

Torriano Primary School – London, England

Students at Torriano Primary declared their own climate emergency as part of the school’s Climate Charter. The school is a plastic free zone since 2018 and students have campaigned for a clean air zone in their local area.

The students at the school also planted meadow seeds as part of the Camden Bee Line project, which also included monitoring the air around their school and studying the links between asthma and air pollution.

Rushmore Primary – London, England

Each class at this school does what they can to protect the planet and dedicates time to litter picking. What’s more impressive, though, is the 200 trees they have planted in a local park with the Mayor of Hackney.

The committee at the school even ran their own fundraiser for Earth Day – the children dressed up as their favourite endangered animals. They managed to raise an incredible £327 in their first year and £260 in their second, that’s amazing!
