What is audio description?

Audio description is a useful tool that helps some people watch and engage with video content. In our videos, Abby, Joel and Shini are describing themselves. This includes what they look like, how they like to wear their hair and make up, their favourite fashion accessories and the context of what they're doing in the video.

You might have heard people introducing themselves in a simliar way when joining an online meeting for a class or a presentation! 👩‍🏫

Have a go at listening to Abby, Joel and Shini's videos with your eyes closed. Can you picture what they look like, what they're wearing and what they're doing? 💭

Audio description can also be heard on TV shows and films, you will often have to look out for the words "Audio Described" or a small "AD" logo on apps like BBC iPlayer, and even when booking cinema tickets. 🎬

The BBC iPlayer user interfact, a large arrow points towards text that says "Audio description", which is toggled on, there is a small "AD" logo in a black box, circled.
