The school said it had carried out an investigation after the boy was hurt

A boy suffered "significant" injuries when he fell out of the window of a moving double-decker school bus in Derby.

The student was taken to hospital after he fell from the upper level of the vehicle on Osmaston Road on Monday.

St Benedict Catholic Voluntary Academy, where the boy is a student, said he had since been discharged and that an investigation had been carried out.

In a letter to parents, head teacher Hazel Boyce said some pupils on the bus had displayed "dangerous behaviour" that led to the window being pushed out and the boy falling from it.

"This came about after many pupils were out of their seats, running up and down the aisle of the bus and jumping on one another," the letter said.

It said the school would look at disciplinary measures to improve pupil behaviour on the buses following other incidents.

Bus examined

The letter said these included "shouting, running about the bus and up and down the stairs, fighting and intimidation, as well as reports of vaping and use of foul language".

The letter also said Notts & Derby Buses, which runs the service, would review CCTV after every journey and report incidents to the school.

Notts & Derby Buses manager Stuart Frost said the company had reported itself to the Vehicle and Operator Services Agency.

He said: "Our bus has been cleared of any defects, we have also brought in an independent engineer to examine and report back to us if there are any defects that could have led to the window falling out, and the report says there are no faults with the bus or its windows."

Derbyshire Police said it had been called to reports that a boy had gone through the top window of a double-decker.
