Drivers warned to lock cars and hide valuables

Some motorists in Jersey have admitted leaving their car keys in the ignition or on the dashboard, according to a crime prevention officer.

Jersey Police held a community impact day to remind people to take care of their vehicles.

PC Ian McCullum said there had been a slight increase in car crime, with cases of "opportunistic individuals" taking cars without consent.

He said Jersey was a very safe place but motorists still needed to take precautions and secure their cars and property.

He said: "Some people have been honest that they leave their keys in their car or ignition and said they will be a little bit more careful in the future."

PC McCallum advised people to make sure their car was locked, even for a short time and never leave keys in the ignition.

He said they should not leave valuables on display, park in well-lit areas and report and suspicious behaviour.

He warned motorists that insurance companies may not pay claims if owners had not taken adequate crime prevention steps.
