Deptford

Episode 1 of 7

Thanyia Moore is joined by Kerry Godliman, Babatunde Aleshe and Fern Brady as five new comics battle it out for a place in the grand final in Cardiff.

The BBC New Comedy Awards are back. Over 1,200 applied before being whittled down to the top 30 comics. In this episode, five hopefuls battle it out for a place in the grand final in Cardiff, where one of them will be crowned the BBC New Comedian of 2022.

This show comes from The Albany, Deptford – a charity and social enterprise that has been supporting the people of Lewisham for over 125 years. The Albany has a long association with comedy. Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer kicked off their careers in what was then the Albany Empire. Hosting the show is local award-winning stand-up and actress Thanyia Moore.

Joining Thanyia is actress and stand-up Kerry Godliman and rising star Babatunde Aleshe, winner of the Best Newcomer at the Black Entertainer Comedy awards. Keeping the house in order is head judge Fern Brady, who brings her honest and authentic approach to judging as only Fern can. The judges will have a tough job picking a winner from the five new comics who will take to the stage with material jam-packed with fresh topics and jokes a-plenty.
