Mariella Frostrup makes the Radio 4 Appeal on behalf of MicroLoan Foundation. The charity provides small start-up loans for female entrepreneurs in Africa so they can set up businesses and help themselves out of poverty.

Maretha runs a small maize and soya farm, a roadside café and a grocery stall. A stable income means she can now provide food, clothes and an education for all of the children in her care. And she’s employing her eldest daughter.

Building a better future
You can help a woman in sub-Saharan Africa, living on less than £2 a day, start a business. With limited literacy, few job opportunities, and no access to traditional banking, escaping poverty is nearly impossible without support.
