Word Classes…
All words belong to a word class.
It’s that word’s type: nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, determiners and exclamations.
These are all word classes.
Consider the following sentence…
“Wow!” said Rachel the reporter as she watched greedy Monty being arrested… for the massive bank fraud he clearly committed – yet she felt sorry for him.
Word class is just a way of classifying a word into its type.
Classifying words is just like classifying things, which we do without even thinking about it.
For example, a car is a vehicle and a bus is also a vehicle.
Cola is a drink and tea is also a drink.
A donkey is a mammal.
Monty is a mammal.
So remember, all words belong to a word class: it’s that word’s type.
Monty is also an ass. Silly Monty.
