Moving from point to point during the presentation

After you have introduced yourself and your topic, you then need to deliver the main points of your presentation.

It’s a good idea to organise your presentation into three or four sections. Then, as you speak, you will be able to move from section to section using linking expressions such as to begin with, firstly, secondly etc.

Question

Here are some useful linking expressions, but in what order should they appear?

  1. I orffen…/I gloi…
  2. Yn drydydd…
  3. Yn ail…
  4. I ddechrau…/Yn gyntaf…
  5. Y pwynt nesa ydy…

Example

I ddechrau, hoffwn i sôn am… - To begin, I’d like to mention/talk about…

Yn ail, dw i eisiau siarad am… - Secondly, I want to talk about…

As you are moving from point to point, try to show off what you know in Welsh. Use a variety of different language patterns. You could:

use different tenses of the verb. Look at Writing about the past and Writing about the future for more information.

ask questions, eg

  • Oes…? – Is there…/Are there…?
  • Ydy…? – Is…?/Are…?
  • Ydych chi'n gwybod ble mae…? – Do you know who … is/are?
  • Ydych chi'n gwybod bod…? – Do you know that…?
  • Pwy fasai'n meddwl? – Who would have thought?

use command forms, eg:

  • Gwrandewch ar hyn. – Listen to this.
  • Meddyliwch am hyn. – Think about this.

use some Welsh idioms and expressions, eg:

  • ar un llaw… ar y llaw arall – on one hand … on the other hand
  • a bod yn onest – to be honest
  • a dweud y gwir – to tell the truth
  • cyn bo hir – before long
  • diolch byth – thank goodness
  • does dim ots – never mind
  • heb os nac onibai – without a doubt
  • wrth gwrs – of course

use a wealth of vocabulary – make sure that you learn words relevant to your topic and use them. Show off what you know!

If you are using PowerPoint or showing maps, images etc, you should refer to these during your presentation, eg:

  • Edrychwch ar y sleid yma. Ydych chi'n gallu gweld...? – Look at this slide. Can you see…?
  • Mae'r map/llun yn dangos… – The map/picture shows…
  • Fel rydych chi'n gallu gweld o'r llun, mae… – As you can see from the picture, there is…

Question

Look at this map and photograph.

A map of Wales labelling Aberystwyth and Cardigan Bay and a photo of Aberystwyth promenade

Can you think of sentences to help you refer to the map and the photograph?
