An edited version of the Belfast Lieutenancy Civic Service to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, held in St Anne’s Cathedral.

The Lord Lieutenant, Dame Fionnuala Jay-O’Boyle DBE DStJ has written: “At this challenging time for Europe and the world, it is entirely right that we remember with proud sorrow the sacrifice of all who endured the vicissitudes of the Second World War, but imperative also that we reflect on our common purpose as a nation, as individuals and within our own communities.”

The service will be led by the Dean, the Very Rev Stephen Forde, with representatives from the Diocese of Down and Connor and the Presbyterian Church and the preacher is Rev Dr John Alderdice, the president of the Methodist Church in Ireland. During the service, candles of peace will be lit and there will be memories of World War II.
