Widowed Gladys lives with her younger brother, Alan Lowther, whom she cares for with motherly concern. She comforts him when his work at Marshalls gets too much and fusses over his health. Her warm-heartedness extends beyond her home and she has supported many in her local community through difficult times.
Gladys is an alcoholic who have travelled a long road to reach sobriety. Alan keeps a close eye on her and is keen she attends Temperance Hotel meetings which promote abstinence. But despite her brother's best efforts, Gladys cannot always be kept safe from temptation.
