"Have you got your bags packed already?"

Whenever they met, Lionel Messi would joke with Lautaro Martinez, asking if his Argentina team-mate would be joining him at Barcelona.

It was early 2020, and Barca were on the lookout for a replacement for Luis Suarez, with Martinez having become their top target for the following season.

Messi was an integral part of the whole operation to lure the Inter Milan forward to the Camp Nou.

At some point, it looked like the deal was pretty much done - but then came the Covid-19 pandemic and suddenly it fell through.

Martinez did not move from San Siro and, five years on, has made Inter his team - hitting at least 20 goals in each of the past four seasons and breaking one record after another.

Lamine Yamal has had an impressive season with Barcelona and it has started to see fans compare him to one of the greatest footballers of all-time in Lionel Messi.

Messi is a Barcelona legend, coming through the academy and then playing senior football for the club for almost 20 years.

But Yamal is not drawing the same comparisons. He said: "I don't compare myself to him, because I don't compare myself to anyone - and much less with Messi.

"I don't think the comparison makes sense, with Messi even less - I'm going to enjoy myself, and be myself."

  8. Bergvall's a 'good kid' with a 'good head on his shoulders'published at 14:39 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

A final word from Tottenham midfielder James Maddison on Lucas Bergvall's new contract with the club and how he's improved:

"He was very keen to start with, very enthusiastic. He was there everywhere. You know in pre-season tour, you turn a corner and he was there. He's a brilliant player, a fantastic talent and Tottenham have done amazingly well to get him to the club and obviously get him to sign a new contract.

"He's got some learning to do within the game I guess. He's so young. Without realising he will already have learned so much, so, next season, he'll be in an even better place.

"The talent is there. He's a great boy, he's a good kid and he's got a good head on his shoulders. He always means well and I always try to help him as much as I can."

  10. Tottenham players and fans are 'in this together'published at 14:31 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

James Maddison on whether the Tottenham players feel the need to give back to the fans by winning the Europa League:

"We definitely want to reward them for the support they have given us because the league has not been good enough. But it hurts me a lot that we are having a poor season. This is why we are so motivated about this competition because the season can still be very special.

"We want to reward them. We feel the support. It hurts and we are trying to put it right.

"The hunger is there and it doesn't always work how you want it to. We are in a unique situation to reward them for their support because they do travel everywhere and we are very grateful for that.

"We are not satisfied [either] and we are in this together."

  11. 'We are behind the manager 100%. I think he's a great man'published at 14:28 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

More from Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison on manager Ange Postecoglou, the morale within the team and whether they are behind the manager:

"We are behind the manager 100%. I think he's a great man. We have had a poor season, especially in the league. We've been very good in Europe, but the league season has been unacceptable.

"He's my manager, he's my gaffer and I respect him an awful amount. And listen, the narrative [of Postecoglou's position being under pressure] is something we players are trying to keep away from because it's not healthy.

"I just know that I come into work everyday and see the lads listening and taking on the messages on how he wants us to play and doing the best for this club and we are in a real good position in Europe, where we can still have a special season under his management.

"I will continue to do that until the day he isn't here. He's my manager and I respect him an awful amount and that will continue."

Get Involved - 'Fans need a big dose of reality'published at 14:25 British Summer Time 30 April

WhatsApp on 03301231826 or text 81111 (UK only, standard message rates apply)

I think fans of all Premier League clubs need a big dose of reality to help get their expectations and arrogance in check. How many Premier League clubs ever win any silverware - in England or in Europe? It is never a given, or a right. How many years did Harry Kane stay at Tottenham without winning anything? Then he moved to Bayern, who had been winning everything in sight for 11 years, and guess what? He joined in a season when they won nothing. No team in any league is ever guaranteed of winning a trophy, no matter how many they may have won before. Every single game is a new challenge with three possible outcomes.

  13. 'We are not taking this game lightly at all'published at 14:24 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison on facing Bodo/Glimt:

"If you are fan of football and you watch European football then you'll have seen them play. Definitely, we know it is going to be tough. We are not taking this game lightly at all. I can promise you that. We know it's going to be tough over two legs, but tomorrow is the home leg and we have to make them feel that.

"They'll be ready, they are not going to come and be wowed by the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They've been to Old Trafford, they've played at Arsenal, they've had great results in Europe.

"We are not going to be lured into the fact that they are going to come to a big stadium and be wowed by that. We know they'll be ready, we've seen the clips and we'll be ready."

  14. 'I am very motivated to help the team have success'published at 14:18 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison on being "ready" for his second bite at a European semi-final:

"Definitely, I am very motivated to help the team have success. We got to a European semi-final with Leicester in the Conference League and lost to Roma over two legs.

"At the time, I didn't realise the magnitude of what we were so close to achieving, until now. It's important for myself and the team that we are ready and don't let any small detail get in the way."

  15. 'You want to feel the hurt and a little bit embarrassed of how Sunday went'published at 14:16 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison spoke about his role as a senior player to help boost morale within the group after losing 5-1 to Liverpool and now having a massive European semi-final to focus on:

"You want to feel the hurt and a little bit embarrassed of how Sunday went. Losing 5-1 in any game is embarrassing. Liverpool obviously won the Premier League on the day and it was a negative day [for us] as a club.

"My job as a senior player is to almost not accept the fact that we were poor and we cannot go forward like that because the league is important and it gives you momentum for Europe, but also have the feeling of trying to put it to one side.

"We've got a lot of young players, we need positivity and you want them to feel good and ready to go into Thursday. Trying to get a nice feel about the group, it's a balancing act."

  16. Maddison on his respect for manager Postecogloupublished at 14:13 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

James Maddison says he has a healthy respect for manager Ange Postecoglou and believes they can still make this into a "special season" by winning the Europa League together.

He added that it was not healthy to follow the "narrative" being put forward by the media about Postecoglou's position at the club.

Maddison said it hurts, but the players want to put it right.

  17. 'We deserve to be here'published at 14:09 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham midfielder James Maddison on the club's opportunity to do something special and win the Europa League:

"It's huge. When you get to the end of your career and you look back, there's not many times a player has been in European semi-finals. Maybe once or twice if you are lucky.

"We need to use that - we are in the final four in a massive competition in Europe and use that to have a great tie on Thursday and in Bodo as well.

"We've got a real special opportunity. There's obviously been a lot of talk about form and being a poor season, but we have the opportunity to do something very special. We've earned it and we deserve to be here. It is a challenge we are going to relish."

  18. 'You'd love us to think' Bodo/Glimt are 'a small club'published at 14:06 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Ange Postecoglou on whether Bodo/Glimt should be considered a small club and one Tottenham should beat: "You'd love us to think that, that you are a small club and we don't rate. No, no. Bodo are there on merit.

"They are there because they are a good football team. It doesn't matter where you come from. I come from the other side of the world where football is the fourth sport, so I don't underestimate anyone.

"You say they are a small club and we are big club, it doesn't matter. We are two clubs in the semi-final of a European competition and they have earned the right to be there.

"They have done very well to get there and we are going to treat them with the respect they deserve. At the same time, make sure we go in there and give it our best performance."

  19. 'Spurs have earned their place in semi-final' - Maddisonpublished at 14:04 British Summer Time 30 April

  20. 'People are almost trying to diminish' Europa League runpublished at 14:00 British Summer Time 30 April

    Tottenham v Bodo/Glimt (Thu, 20:00 BST)

    Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou on his message to the players this week: "I am really strong at the moment on the parallel worlds we are trying to traverse and I have sensed, which is not surprising because this is the way this club is perceived, people are almost trying to diminish it in some respects.

"I have seen some people saying it is the equivalent of Man Utd winning the FA Cup, no. Not on any planet is it equivalent. That is suggesting that maybe we are not worthy of Champions League.

"Things are there that are designed to diminish what is ahead of us, which is an unbelievable opportunity. Irrespective of how this season has gone, we have generations of fans who want this more than anything else - to share this with the people that they love, a special moment supporting their football club.

"We could be flying in the league, but it wouldn't make this opportunity any different. The opportunity is the same and I have made that clear to the players.

"We are disappointed with Sunday at Liverpool, we were nowhere near the level we needed to be. Again, that is something we need to deal with separately."
