Typhoon Kong-rey turns towards Japan after striking Taiwan

Typhoon Kong-rey, the biggest typhoon to directly hit Taiwan in nearly 30 years, has made landfall on the island's eastern coast.

At one point before it made landfall, Kong-rey was packing winds over 200km/h (124mph) close to its centre, making it the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane.

This satellite imagery shows the distinct eye of the storm as it approached Taiwan.

Kong-rey is now forecast to graze China's coast and then head towards Japan, although it is weakening significantly.
