Key points
square numberThe result when a number has been multiplied by itself., cubeA cube number is a number multiplied by itself 3 times. and powers are shown as small digits called indicesIndices are powers eg, 3 to the power of 2, written 3² .
The opposites of squaring and cubing are square rootThe opposite of squaring a number is called finding the square root. and cube rootThe opposite of cubing a number is called finding the cube root..
The square root of a number is not always an integerIntegers are numbers with no fraction or decimal part. They can be positive, negative or zero. 42, 8, and 10000 are examples of integers.. When this is the case use the power (√) button on a calculator and round to 1 decimal place.
Finding the square root
Squaring a number is when a number is multiplied by itself. For example, 4² means 4 x 4
The opposite of squaring a number is called finding the square rootThe opposite of squaring a number is called finding the square root.. The square root is a number whose square is equal to the given number. One square root of 36 is 6 since 6² = 36. 36 also has a negative square root, since (-6)² = 36.
There are two roots when calculating the square root of a number (a positive and a negative solution). The two roots could be written individually or using the ± symbol. For example, the two roots of 16 are +4 and -4 could be written as ±4
The symbol for the square root is √. For example, √36 means ‘the square root of 36’. The symbol √ refers to the positive square root, so √36 = 6
It can be useful to memorise the first 12 square numbers which are 1, 4, 9, 16, 25, 36, 49, 64, 81, 100, 121 and 144
Examples
Image caption, This image shows the link between squaring and finding the square root of a number. 3 squared is 9 (because 3² = 3 x 3 = 9). The opposite of squaring a number is called finding the square root. The square root of 9 is 3
Image caption, √25 means ‘the square root of 25’. Find the square root of 25
Image caption, 5² = 5 x 5 and 5 x 5 = 25. The square root of 25 is 5
Image caption, √100 means ‘the square root of 100’. Find the square root of 100
Image caption, Find the square root of 100. 10² means 10 x 10. This equals 100. The square root of 100 is 10
Image caption, The square root of 106 is not a whole number. 10² = 100 and 11² = 121. Therefore √106 lies between 10 and 11. Use the √ button on a calculator to find the exact value.
Image caption, √106 = 10.2956... This answer needs to be rounded to 1 decimal place. A number line can help when rounding. 10.2956 rounded to 1 decimal place is 10.3. √106 = 10∙3 (to 1 decimal place).
Image caption, Find both roots of 16 (a positive and negative solution).
Image caption, The square root of 16 is 4 (because 4² = 4 x 4 = 16). The square root of 16 is also -4 (because -4² = -4 x -4 = +16). This is usually written as ±4

Question
What is the square root of 49?

7² = 7 x 7 = 49
This means that √49 = 7

Finding the cube root
cubeA cube number is a number multiplied by itself 3 times. a number is when a number is multiplied by itself 3 times. For example 4³ means 4 x 4 x 4
The opposite of cubing a number is finding the cube rootThe opposite of cubing a number is called finding the cube root.. The symbol for the cube root is ³√
The cube root of a number is not always an integer. When this is the case use the ³√ button on a calculator and round to 1 decimal place.
It can be useful to memorise the first few cube numbers which are 1, 8, 27, 64, 125 and 216
Examples
Image caption, This image shows the link between cubing and finding the cube root of a number. 4 cubed is 64 (because 4³ = 4 x 4 x 4 = 64). The opposite of cubing a number is called finding the cube root. The cube root of 64 is 4
Image caption, ³√27 means ‘the cube root of 27’. Find the cube root of 27
Image caption, 3³ = 3 x 3 x 3 which equals 27. The cube root of 27 is 3
Image caption, ³√1000 means ‘the cube root of 1000’. Find the cube root of 1000
Image caption, 10³ = 10 x 10 x 10 which equals 1000. The cube root of 1000 is 10.
Image caption, Find the cube root of 90. 90 is not a cube number. The cube root of 90 therefore is not a whole number.
Image caption, 4³ = 64 and 5³ = 125. Therefore ³√90 lies between 4 and 5. Use the ³√ button on a calculator to find the exact value.
Image caption, ³√90 = 4∙4814... Round this answer to 1 decimal place. A number line can help when rounding. 4∙4814 rounded to 1 decimal place is 4∙5. ³√90 = 4∙5 (to 1 decimal place).
